30 Duke Energy Carolinas Lineworkers Qualify for October International Lineman's Rodeo

Thirty Duke Energy lineworkers from the Carolinas won regional titles and will compete in the October International Lineman’s Rodeo in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Participants practiced complex repairs in deenergized environments, reinforcing safety and grid-restoration skills that support reliability for 8.7 million electric customers.

1. Regional Competition Results

Thirty regional winners from Duke Energy’s Carolinas operation secured top spots in apprentice and journeyman divisions, with Quinnton Smith and Joshua Buckner leading their respective fields. East and West division champions were named across both apprentice and journeyman categories, and overall best apprentice and journeyman team honors went to Smith and the Buckner-Manick-Nickols trio.

2. Skill Reinforcement and Safety

Lineworkers practiced complex pole climbs, equipment repairs and power restoration tasks in a controlled, deenergized setting, sharpening the real-world abilities needed to restore service quickly and safely. Rigorous drills reinforced company safety protocols and advanced technical standards that translate directly to field operations.

3. Volunteer and Community Support

The 2026 Carolinas Lineman’s Rodeo was supported by 47 Duke Energy volunteers, 30 community-college students and staff, 79 event judges and eight bucket-truck operators. This collaboration underscored Duke Energy’s commitment to workforce development and community engagement in its service territories.

4. Next Steps at International Rodeo

Regional winners will represent Duke Energy in the International Lineman’s Rodeo this October in Bonner Springs, Kansas, competing against top lineworkers worldwide. Success at the global event will showcase Duke Energy’s frontline expertise and bolster its grid resilience initiatives.
