49,000 Lake Tahoe Residents at Risk as Alphabet Data Centers Consume 75% of Supply

NV Energy will redirect 75% of Lake Tahoe’s electricity—serving 49,000 residents—to growing Nevada data centers owned by Alphabet, Amazon and Meta. A study projects data centers could consume 35% of Nevada’s power by 2030, forcing Liberty Utilities into unstable short-term fixes and bids for new transmission access.

1. Power Supply Reallocation

NV Energy, which supplies three-quarters of Lake Tahoe’s electricity via Liberty Utilities, will divert capacity to support at least 70 data centers in Nevada, including facilities owned by Alphabet. The shift reallocates existing transmission until Liberty secures its own lines under a temporary 2009 agreement, raising outage fears for local customers.

2. Resident Concerns and Interim Solutions

Approximately 49,000 residents worry they’ll face blackouts as Liberty seeks bids from alternative providers. Local officials describe stopgap measures as “unstable,” and emphasize that long-term competition with major data centers and state utilities over rates will intensify.

3. Future Demand Projections

Research indicates Nevada data centers could account for 35% of the state’s electricity consumption by 2030. Further studies warn data-center–driven demand may push electricity prices up by as much as 29%, or up to 57% in dense regions, underscoring the urgency of expanding grid capacity.
