All five patients completing tafenoquine combination treatment for relapsing babesiosis showed clinical improvement, the company said. Conventional parasite tests were negative in all five, but more sensitive testing detected residual infection in one patient.
The company plans to pursue accelerated approval if its efficacy submission relies primarily on immunosuppressed patients with relapsing babesiosis. A separate randomized hospital trial is scheduled to be unblinded in January 2027, with FDA regulatory discussions planned afterward. Tafenoquine is approved in the United States for malaria prevention, but not for babesiosis treatment or prevention.
