A possible SpaceX-Tesla merger? Here's what people are saying
SPCX•Elon Musk said a SpaceX-Tesla merger would be “a good idea” and that the companies had formed special committees to discuss a union. Shares of SpaceX rose 8% in extended trading.
1. Merger views
Investors and analysts described a potential merger as strategically compelling, citing the companies’ work in AI, autonomy and robotics. Dan Ives said Tesla shares might need to be around $550 for a deal to win approval, while other commentators said shareholder votes would be required.
2. Governance questions
Several commentators highlighted governance as a hurdle, including the challenge of one person running both companies. Kenneth Goh said nothing had been agreed and noted that Musk was excluded from the committees. Michael Monaghan said Tesla’s China operations might need separation or strict information firewalls because of SpaceX’s role as a U.S. defense contractor.
3. Potential benefits
Commentators also pointed to possible efficiencies, reduced public-company costs and the potential for Tesla’s cash-generative automotive business to support SpaceX’s capital-intensive projects. One estimate put the companies’ combined value at around $3.5 trillion.
