ABB whitepaper on Ireland data center grid compliance
ABB published a whitepaper on Ireland’s data center grid-compliance requirements, targeting EirGrid’s proposed MPID345 grid code modification.
MPID345 would force large demand sites to ride through faults, restore 90% of pre-fault demand within 500 milliseconds, and tolerate ±1 Hz/second frequency swings.
The whitepaper frames compliance as a sub-second power-control issue, not an energy-capacity buildout, citing limits of conventional UPS and generator designs.
Ireland’s data centers use about 24% of national electricity, projected to reach 30% by 2032, raising grid-stability risk.
Load shed during fault events rose to 387 MW in May 2025 from 74 MW in January 2022, increasing system-stability exposure.
