AbbVie's skin disease drug reduces lesions in trial, company eyes weight-loss combination
ABBV•AbbVie said lutikizumab met the main goal in a late-stage trial for hidradenitis suppurativa: 31% of patients had at least a 75% reduction in lesions after 16 weeks, versus 23% on placebo. The company plans to test it with experimental weight-loss drug ABBV-295 by year-end.
1. Trial results
AbbVie said lutikizumab significantly reduced inflammatory lumps and abscesses in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa, meeting the main goal of a late-stage study. In the 1,400-patient trial, about 31% of patients receiving the drug achieved at least a 75% reduction in inflammatory skin lesions after 16 weeks, compared with 23% of patients on placebo.
2. Combination plans
AbbVie expects to begin testing lutikizumab alongside experimental weight-loss drug ABBV-295 by the end of the year. Immunology head Kori Wallace said obesity can worsen the skin condition, and that reducing weight alongside anti-inflammatory treatment could increase efficacy. AbbVie is also testing Rinvoq in hidradenitis suppurativa, with late-stage results expected by the end of 2026.
