Adecoagro to Pilot 10MW Biomass Bitcoin Mining with 1,280 Rigs
AGRO•Adecoagro will launch a 10-megawatt sugarcane biomass Bitcoin mining pilot with 1,280 machines powered by bagasse on July 1, 2026. This leverages its existing 230+ megawatts of renewable generation capacity to create a new revenue stream from agricultural waste energy.
1. Bitcoin Mining Pilot Launch
Adecoagro will begin a 10-megawatt pilot on July 1, 2026, deploying 1,280 Bitcoin mining machines powered entirely by sugarcane bagasse energy. The small-scale test is designed to validate continuous operation and energy reliability before any full-scale rollout.
2. Biomass Co-Generation Infrastructure
The project taps into existing bagasse boilers at sugarcane mills, converting fibrous waste into steam-driven electricity without adding new power plants. Surplus energy from co-generation is directed to mining rigs, optimizing asset utilization and reducing curtailment risk.
3. Established Renewable Platform
Adecoagro currently operates over 230 megawatts of renewable generation capacity across South America, including hydro and biomass assets. This proven infrastructure provides a stable energy supply and operational expertise for the pilot.
4. Revenue Diversification and Sustainability
Integrating Bitcoin mining adds a third revenue stream alongside sugar and ethanol production, potentially enhancing overall margins. The model also supports waste reduction and showcases a circular agricultural economy using byproduct energy.
