Morgan Stanley has been involved in some of the largest energy deals in recent years, including ExxonMobil’s $65 billion acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources in 2023 and Chevron's $53 billion acquisition of Hess in 2025. It also served as a lead global coordinator and underwriter for Saudi Aramco's initial public offering.
Expansion through XRG and deal ambitions
ADNOC is accelerating expansion through its XRG investment arm and is chasing acquisitions in gas, chemicals and shipping to grow production, refining and trading following the UAE's exit from OPEC.
O'Dwyer has worked for Morgan Stanley since 2008, joining from Lehman Brothers.
ADNOC hires Morgan Stanley energy co-head as CIO
Abu Dhabi state energy firm ADNOC has hired Morgan Stanley's global co-head of energy Michael O'Dwyer as chief investment officer as it pursues expansion at home and abroad, three sources familiar with the move said on Thursday.
ADNOC did not respond to a request for comment. Morgan Stanley and O'Dwyer declined to comment.
