Aduro Appoints Cenovus Veteran to Lead Bitumen and Paraffinic Crude Pilot Upgrading

ADURADUR

Industry veteran Scott Smith, with over 25 years at Cenovus Energy, joins Aduro as Program Director to drive pilot-scale development of Hydrochemolytic Technology for bitumen and paraffinic crude upgrading. His appointment follows successful lab validation of HCT on waxy crudes, positioning Aduro for commercial-scale petroleum applications.

1. Executive Appointment

Aduro has named Scott Smith, a 25-year energy technology veteran and former Cenovus Energy innovation leader, as Program Director of Petroleum Technology Solutions. Smith’s role will focus on advancing Hydrochemolytic Technology (HCT) applications for bitumen and paraffinic crude, leveraging his past leadership of upstream and downstream innovation portfolios.

2. Technical Validation of HCT

Recent laboratory work demonstrated HCT’s effectiveness on waxy and paraffinic crude oils, complementing Aduro’s existing bitumen upgrading trials. This progress, supported by a continuation-in-part patent filing and third-party testing, broadens the company’s feedstock scope and underpins the development of targeted pilot campaigns.

3. Commercial Scale-up Strategy

Smith will guide pilot-scale development and integration approaches within existing petroleum facilities, collaborating with refiners and midstream operators to establish performance benchmarks under industry conditions. These efforts aim to generate data for commercial feasibility, accelerate demonstration projects, and inform future deployment pathways for HCT in oil upgrading.
