AEP Ohio to Install $4.2B 765-kV Transmission for 10 GW Piketon Data Campus
AEP Ohio and SB Energy will invest $4.2 billion in 765-kV transmission lines to power a planned 10-gigawatt data center campus at the former Piketon diffusion site without raising customer rates. The project, launching power flow in 2029, aims to support rapid demand growth and stimulate Appalachian Ohio’s economic development.
1. Investment and Partnership
American Electric Power's Ohio unit has partnered with SB Energy and the Department of Energy to deploy $4.2 billion in advanced digital and transmission infrastructure at the former Piketon gaseous diffusion plant. SB Energy will fully fund the new 765-kV facilities, enabling a 10-gigawatt data center campus without raising customer rates.
2. High-Voltage Transmission Technology
AEP Ohio will construct new 765-kV lines, a technology it pioneered in 1969, to efficiently deliver six times the energy of standard 345-kV lines. These high-capacity transmission corridors form the backbone for the planned data center campus and regional power delivery upgrades.
3. Timeline and Regulatory Path
Initial route planning is underway ahead of engagement with landowners and community stakeholders. The Ohio Power Siting Board will oversee permitting, which requires public comment, environmental impact studies, and socioeconomic analyses, with power expected to flow by 2029.
4. Regional Demand and Economic Development
Ohio's data center boom has driven some of the fastest electricity demand growth in the nation, and this infrastructure will unlock billions in regional investment. The project aims to stimulate Appalachian Ohio’s economy while shielding ratepayers from new infrastructure costs.
