AeroVironment Demonstrates LOCUST Laser Weapon System Aboard USS George H.W. Bush
AeroVironment successfully demonstrated its LOCUST directed-energy swarm laser weapon system aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, validating naval deployment under live-fire conditions. The trial advances the company’s position for future U.S. Navy contracts as the service allocates significant funding to directed-energy weapons.
1. Demonstration Aboard Carrier
On April 21, AeroVironment installed and operated its compact LOCUST laser system aboard USS George H.W. Bush, executing live-fire trials against aerial drone surrogates to validate targeting accuracy and system stability in maritime conditions.
2. System Capabilities
LOCUST mounts multiple 10-kilowatt class lasers on small unmanned aerial vehicles, enabling coordinated swarm engagements that detect, track and neutralize low-signature threats with precision and rapid response across contested airspace.
3. Contract and Market Outlook
Following the successful trial, AeroVironment is positioned to compete for forthcoming Naval contract awards, aligning with the U.S. Navy’s roughly $150 million directed-energy weapons budget request and a global market expected to expand into the multi-billion-dollar range by 2030.
