AI infrastructure yield falls short of depreciation costs, Catalyst Investors says
QQQ•Catalyst Investors said estimated compute spending of $97 billion implies a 4.4% yield on $2.2 trillion of infrastructure investment during 2024–2026, below the 10%–14% yield needed for depreciation. It said the buildout relies on frontier labs’ ability to fund commitments, including OpenAI’s $1.15 trillion in forward commitments.
1. Investment returns fall short
Catalyst Investors warned that AI infrastructure revenue remains insufficient to support the industry’s investment commitments, increasing financing risks. Estimated compute spending of $97 billion implies a 4.4% yield on $2.2 trillion of infrastructure investment during 2024–2026, below the 10%–14% yield required to cover depreciation alone.
2. Financing concerns
The buildout depends on frontier labs’ ability to fund spending commitments. OpenAI’s $1.15 trillion in forward commitments underpin infrastructure financing, despite an operating loss exceeding revenue and an IPO postponed to 2027.
3. CoreWeave credit risk
CoreWeave’s five-year credit default swaps exceeded 1,000 basis points amid concerns on October 14, implying more than 60% odds of default within five years.
