AI productivity gains could add $28 billion-$84 billion to India’s annual GDP, Cognizant study finds
CTSH•Cognizant research estimates AI-driven productivity could add $28 billion to $84 billion to India’s annual nominal GDP under realistic near-term adoption scenarios. The theoretical upper bound is $830 billion, assuming workforce-wide adoption and full conversion of productivity gains into output.
1. AI adoption and returns
The model estimates a theoretical annual GDP gain of $830 billion if AI is adopted across the workforce and all productivity gains convert into economic output. Among surveyed Indian employees, 97% reported AI productivity gains averaging 15%, while business leaders said only 36% of employees have access to AI tools despite 74% reporting completed AI training. In addition, 91% of leaders reported no revenue impact, and 37% said they had paused or stopped AI initiatives over unclear returns on investment.
