Akebia Therapeutics reported topline results showing that thrice-weekly vadadustat met the VOCAL trial’s primary goal of non-inferiority to ESA treatment in maintaining hemoglobin. The trial enrolled 353 patients with kidney disease-related anemia receiving in-center hemodialysis, and serious treatment-emergent adverse event rates were similar between treatments. The regimen remains investigational; Vafseo is approved for once-daily use.
