Algoma Steel and Roshel have launched Roshel Algoma Defence to create a Canadian Centre of Excellence for sovereign ballistic steel, offering metal fabrication, forming, welding and machining for defence programs including Light Utility Vehicles and DAME. The joint venture will generate over 500 manufacturing jobs and facilitate exports to allies.

Algoma Steel and Roshel have established Roshel Algoma Defence Solutions Inc. to deliver sovereign ballistic steel from a new Canadian Centre of Excellence. The joint venture combines Algoma’s steel plate and sheet expertise with Roshel’s armoured vehicle manufacturing to meet Buy Canadian defence procurement requirements.

2. Production Capabilities and Defence Programs

Roshel Algoma Defence will offer full-cycle capabilities—metal fabrication, forming, welding and machining—in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Initial targets include supplying ballistic steel for Light Utility Vehicles, the Domestic Arctic Mobility Enhancement program, naval vessels and submarines to support Canadian Armed Forces needs.

3. Economic Impact and Export Potential

The partnership is expected to support over 500 high-quality manufacturing jobs and strengthen Canada’s skilled industrial workforce, reinforcing domestic supply chains tied to automotive and other sectors. It will also enable exports of Canadian-made ballistic steel solutions to allied nations, enhancing national security and economic growth.
