Alibaba Launches Zhenwu M890 Chip with 3× Performance Advantage

BABABABA

Alibaba released its Zhenwu M890 AI chip, claiming 3× performance over the Zhenwu 810E predecessor as Nvidia’s high-end GPUs face Chinese market restrictions. The Hangzhou-based company has shipped over 560,000 Zhenwu series chips to more than 400 clients, strengthening its self-reliance in AI computing.

1. Zhenwu M890 Performance Leap

Alibaba's new Zhenwu M890 chip delivers three times the processing throughput of its Zhenwu 810E predecessor, positioning it as a domestic alternative to mid-tier Nvidia GPUs restricted from Chinese sales.

2. US-China Semiconductor Restrictions

Nvidia’s most advanced AI GPUs have been barred from sale in China due to U.S. export controls, prompting Beijing to restrict import of even licensed models like the H200 and push for local chip development.

3. Shipments and Client Adoption

Alibaba has shipped over 560,000 units of its Zhenwu series to more than 400 customers, including major automakers and financial institutions, showcasing broad market acceptance of its in-house silicon.

4. Strategic Impact on Alibaba

By strengthening its own AI chip portfolio, Alibaba aims to insulate its cloud and AI services from geopolitical export fluctuations, supporting long-term technology roadmaps and reducing dependency on foreign suppliers.
