AllianceBernstein says short-duration high-yield bonds offer lower volatility without sacrificing returns
AB•AllianceBernstein favors short-duration high-yield bonds, saying they matched broader high-yield returns with two-thirds of the volatility over nearly four decades when CCC-rated debt was excluded. The Bloomberg US High Yield index yield topped 8% in late September 2026, and historical one-year returns after such crossings averaged 12%.
1. Short-duration bond case
AllianceBernstein favors short-duration high-yield bonds, citing attractive yields and lower volatility from shorter maturities and higher-quality credits. Over nearly four decades, short-maturity high-yield bonds excluding CCC-rated debt matched broader high-yield returns with two-thirds of the volatility.
2. Yield and default history
The Bloomberg US High Yield index yield exceeded 8% in late September 2026, its first crossing of that threshold since April 2025. One-year returns following past crossings averaged 12%. CCC-rated credits historically accounted for around 80% of defaults.
