Allianz says distraction contributes to at least one in three crashes at Motor Day 2026
ALV•Allianz said new analyses link distraction to more than 30% of traffic accidents, compared with earlier estimates of around 10% in Germany. It also reported that better touchscreen layouts reduced eyes-off-road time by up to 25%, while 70% of surveyed German drivers favored traditional switches.
1. Distraction and crash risk
At its 14th Motor Day in Munich on October 21, 2026, Allianz called for safer vehicle cockpits. The insurer said new analyses linked distraction to more than 30% of traffic accidents, compared with earlier estimates of around 10% in Germany. In selected critical scenarios, distracted drivers faced roughly triple the crash risk and performed worse than drivers with simulated blood alcohol of 0.08%.
2. Calls for accessible controls
Allianz said better touchscreen layouts reduced eyes-off-road time by up to 25%, and 70% of surveyed German drivers favored traditional switches over nested touchscreen menus. The insurer urged manufacturers to keep critical controls readily accessible and called for stronger regulation to address driver distraction.
