Alphabet Explores In-Orbit AI with SpaceX, Embeds Gemini in Android’s 2 Billion Devices
Alphabet is collaborating with SpaceX to explore deploying AI servers in low-Earth orbit for sub-20ms inference latency on advanced models. Alphabet plans to launch prototype AI servers aboard SpaceX satellites to test low-Earth orbit inference for its Gemini models. By targeting sub-20 millisecond round-trip latency, the venture seeks to overcome on-ground network bottlenecks, potentially enabling real-time AI services in areas with limited terrestrial connectivity.

Gemini will power new generative features in Android’s core apps—search suggestions, smart reply in messaging, on-device summarization and image editing—in an over-the-air update. Covering more than 2 billion active devices, the rollout aims to differentiate Android from rival ecosystems by tightly weaving AI into everyday workflows.
