Alphabet is engaged in advanced discussions with SpaceX to launch modular data center satellites in tight formations, using optical laser and radio frequency links to interconnect nodes. The talks aim to leverage SpaceX’s launch and manufacturing expertise to deploy an initial constellation by 2028, enhancing AI compute scalability in orbit.
2. Project Suncatcher Prototypes and Technical Architecture
Last year, Google announced Project Suncatcher in collaboration with Planet Labs, aiming to launch prototype data center satellites by 2027. These modular units will cast off heat directly into space’s vacuum and draw continuous solar energy, potentially slashing on-ground cooling and power expenses.
