Alphabet’s Waymo Recalls 3,871 Robotaxis Over Freeway AI Defect
Alphabet’s Waymo is recalling 3,871 robotaxis after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified a Fifth Generation Automated Driving System defect allowing cars to enter closed freeway work zones at speed. Waymo has temporarily restricted freeway driving and will deploy a free over-the-air software update to resolve the issue.
1. Recall Issued Over Driving System Flaw
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identified a software defect in Waymo’s Fifth Generation Automated Driving System that could cause 3,871 robotaxis to enter closed freeway construction zones at speed. Waymo has formally initiated a recall to address the hazard.
2. Interim Freeway Driving Restrictions
To mitigate risk while developing a permanent remedy, Waymo has narrowed its operational design domain, suspending all freeway driving for affected vehicles pending the software fix, reducing its fleet’s highway coverage.
3. Over-the-Air Software Update Plan
Waymo will deliver a complimentary over-the-air update to each robotaxi, enhancing location recognition and construction zone detection. The update is expected to restore freeway capabilities without additional hardware changes.
4. Broader Autonomous Vehicle Oversight
This recall follows an industry trend of increased federal scrutiny, including investigations into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system. It underscores regulatory focus on safety and could influence future autonomous vehicle deployment timelines.
