Amazon AI Data Centers Hampered by Power Shortages and 2.5B Gallon Water Use
AMZN•Amazon warns that power shortages could delay half of its US hyperscale AI data centers, with nuclear solutions years away and traditional grid capacity constrained. Its data centers consumed 2.5 billion gallons of water last year, and the company faces scrutiny over potential conflict minerals in its supply chain.
1. Power Constraints Delay AI Infrastructure
Amazon’s rapid AI data center expansion faces delays as grid capacity limits half of planned US hyperscale facilities from breaking ground in 2026 and 2027. Plans for self-generated power and long-term nuclear projects are unlikely to scale quickly enough to meet projected electricity demands.
2. Data Center Water Usage Provokes ESG Concerns
Last year Amazon’s data center operations consumed 2.5 billion gallons of water, with individual hyperscale sites drawing up to 5 million gallons daily. This level of usage intensifies environmental scrutiny and raises concerns over local resource competition.
3. Supply Chain Scrutiny Over Conflict Minerals
A recent report indicates conflict minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo may be entering major tech supply chains, and Amazon has yet to clarify its sourcing certifications. Failure to address these allegations could lead to reputational damage and increased regulatory oversight.
