Amazon bets $3 billion on India's fast-delivery boom, sources say
AMZN•Amazon will invest $3 billion in its India quick-commerce business by 2030, including $1 billion by the end of 2027, two sources said. The company said the business has exceeded $1 billion in annualized gross sales over the past three months.
1. Investment plans
Amazon plans to invest $1 billion in quick commerce by the end of 2027 and another $2 billion by 2030, two people with direct knowledge of the plans said. Amazon declined to comment on the planned investment figures but said its quick-commerce business had exceeded $1 billion in annualized gross sales over the past three months.
2. Stores and selection
The investment will support adding small neighborhood warehouses to Amazon Now, expanding product selection, and improving inventory management and demand prediction. Amazon is targeting around 1,300 stores by April next year, up from around 750 now, one source said. The company plans to focus on daily essentials and does not currently plan to stock items such as iPhones in quick commerce.
3. Competitive challenges
Amazon has a 6.2% share of India's quick-commerce market, while Blinkit, Swiggy and Zepto together control 77%, Datum Intelligence data shows. Datum founder Satish Meena said catching up with rivals that have quality service and loyal customers will not be easy, though Amazon could draw existing website customers to fast deliveries.
