1. Cuts in Stores unit
Amazon said it cut a small number of jobs, primarily in its Stores unit, which oversees its main e-commerce website. A person familiar with the matter said fewer than 1,000 white-collar workers were let go.
2. Teams and locations affected
The cuts coincided with Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days promotion, which began Tuesday and runs through Wednesday. Internal Slack posts suggested divisions including customer service and selling partner services were involved, and employees in the US, India and UK were among those affected.
3. Further reductions
The layoffs follow a larger round of 30,000 job cuts that began last year and continued into January. Founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos said in a Fox News interview that continued cuts had been necessary because Amazon overhired during the pandemic.
