Amazon Plans Over 1,000 Micro-Fulfillment Centers in 100 Indian Cities
AMZN•Amazon operates Amazon Now in over 15 Indian cities with 500 micro-fulfillment centers and plans to expand to 100 cities with more than 1,000 centers, broadening its assortment from groceries to apparel, electronics and home products. This accelerated rollout positions Amazon to capture market share in India’s fastest-growing quick-commerce sector.
1. Amazon Now Expansion Strategy
Amazon launched its Amazon Now service in August 2024 and currently operates over 500 micro-fulfillment centers across more than 15 Indian cities. Management aims to build a network exceeding 1,000 centers across 100 cities by year-end, expanding beyond groceries into apparel, electronics and home products to meet evolving demand.
2. Competitive Landscape in India
Walmart-backed Flipkart Minutes has established 1,000 centers in under two years and targets 1,500 by end-2026, while market leader Blinkit runs 2,243 centers. Rivals Zepto and Swiggy Instamart are also scaling rapidly, intensifying competition for urban and tier-II quick-delivery customers.
3. Implications for Amazon’s Growth
The aggressive buildout underscores Amazon’s commitment to winning in India’s burgeoning quick-commerce market, potentially boosting order volumes and revenue growth. However, capital expenditure on micro-fulfillment infrastructure and logistics could pressure margins in the near term as Amazon vies for market share.
