Amazon, Walmart's Flipkart launch review of unlicensed security camera listings on India platforms
AMZN•Amazon and Flipkart are reviewing security camera listings in India after an analysis found more than 700 of roughly 770 listings lacked approval required under rules introduced in April. At least a dozen listings have been removed, and Amazon plans to remove Dahua’s Imou brand page.
1. Platforms review listings
Amazon and Flipkart began checking internet-enabled security cameras offered by third-party sellers and brands in India. People familiar with the checks said products without government approval would be removed; Amazon declined to comment, and Flipkart did not respond.
2. Hundreds lack approval
An analysis found more than 700 of roughly 770 camera listings on the platforms were for models absent from the Bureau of Indian Standards’ public database of approved brands or cameras. Since April, manufacturers have been required to submit camera hardware and software for testing and certification before selling in India.
3. Listings removed
At least a dozen listings have been taken down since Tuesday, including two models from Hikvision’s EZVIZ brand. One source said Amazon had decided to remove Dahua’s Imou brand page. Former Indian cybersecurity chief Gulshan Rai said a compromised camera could pose a surveillance risk and become a cybersecurity entry point.
