Ambani's Reliance says Jio awaits same clearances as Starlink
RELI•Reliance said it welcomes competition from Starlink and that Jio's satellite services are awaiting the same clearances needed for launch. Starlink said it had built infrastructure in India with government approvals and was ready to offer service.
1. Reliance responds to Musk
Reliance said it had never feared competition, responding to Elon Musk's accusations that Mukesh Ambani was blocking Starlink's India launch. The company said its own satellite services were also awaiting clearance.
2. Services await clearance
India has licensed Starlink, Jio's satellite internet arm and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb to operate, but none has the security clearance needed to launch. Starlink said it had worked with Indian regulators and the industry for more than five years and built systems, gateways and other infrastructure in India with required government approvals.
3. Jio and the market
Jio houses Reliance's telecom arm, which has more than 530 million customers and could compete with Starlink in India's internet market. Reliance's statement came days before Jio Platforms seeks a $108 billion valuation in an IPO.
