AMD Ecosystem Strengthened by SK Hynix’s 880bn Won HBM Bet and ASUS Laptops
AMD•SK Hynix's 880 billion won investment in high-bandwidth memory with AMD yielded market leadership in HBM as AI demand soared post-ChatGPT, reinforcing AMD’s ecosystem. Concurrently Marvell’s 311% stock rally on its AI roadmap and ASUS’s AMD-based ExpertBook laptops offering up to 55 TOPS and 19-hour battery underscore intensifying AI competition.
1. SK Hynix Partnership and HBM Success
In 2014 SK Hynix and AMD released the first high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chip, followed by an 880 billion won investment in a packaging facility in Icheon. Despite underutilization in 2019, the facility now supplies Nvidia AI accelerators and bolsters AMD’s GPU performance in data centers.
2. Marvell’s AI Roadmap and Competitive Dynamics
Marvell’s stock surged 311% over the past year after management outlined a multi-year AI-focused roadmap, with its data center segment reaching 75% of revenue by early 2025. Advanced packaging and custom XPU capacity for three-nanometer production highlight intensifying competition in AI silicon where AMD is a major player.
3. ASUS ExpertBook Launch with AMD
ASUS rolled out its ExpertBook PM5 G2 powered by AMD AI-accelerated processors alongside Intel models, featuring up to 55 NPU TOPS, 19 hours of battery life and NIST SP 800-193 security compliance. Pricing ranges from $2,629.99 to $2,999.99, reflecting growing OEM adoption of AMD silicon in business laptops.
