American Airlines will keep its 2027 elite status spending thresholds unchanged for a third consecutive year, aligning with Delta and United Airlines. The carrier also added mid-tier perks like two food and beverage coupons at 15,000 points and introduced free in-flight Wi-Fi for loyalty members to attract higher-spending travelers.

1. American Airlines Marks Centennial with Title Sponsorship of OBAP’s 50th Conference

In its 100th year of continuous operation, American Airlines has been named Title Sponsor of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals’ (OBAP) 50th Annual Conference. The collaboration, announced January 7, 2026, celebrates five decades of OBAP advancing career pathways for underrepresented communities in aerospace. The partnership kicks off January 13 at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport—the site of OBAP’s first meeting—and will culminate in a three-day conference August 12–14, 2026, featuring a documentary premiere, Hall of Fame induction, awards gala, youth engagement programs and career-development workshops. American Airlines operates more than 6,000 daily flights to over 350 destinations across 60 countries and serves over 200 million customers annually, signaling the airline’s commitment to leveraging its global network and 130,000-strong workforce to drive industry diversity and inclusion.

2. Elite Loyalty Status Requirements Held Steady for a Third Consecutive Year

For the 2027 earning year, American Airlines will maintain its existing loyalty program thresholds, preserving the 40,000-point requirement for Gold status and equivalent benchmarks for Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum. This decision aligns with rivals Delta and United, who have also kept their elite-status spending thresholds unchanged for the 2026 earning cycle. In addition, American is introducing intermediate perks—such as two complimentary food and beverage coupons at the 15,000-point milestone and subscriptions to select digital publications—to enhance member engagement. These measures aim to bolster high-value customer retention and drive ancillary revenue through credit-card spend and onboard purchases without altering the core status-earning structure.

3. Launch of Free In-Flight Wi-Fi for Loyalty Members

American Airlines announced a partnership with AT&T to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi to all members of its loyalty program, rolling out the service on selected domestic and transcontinental routes in phases beginning in mid-2026. The move complements prior investments in premium cabin renovations and expanded lounge capacity and responds to growing passenger demand for connectivity. By absorbing the cost of Wi-Fi access for elite and base-level members, American aims to enhance customer experience, increase loyalty-program enrollments and capture additional ancillary revenue through digital offerings onboard.
