American Airlines to Offer Free Wi-Fi to Select Travelers on Two Million Flights
American Airlines will begin offering free, high-speed Wi-Fi to select travelers on flights starting this month. The service is slated to cover around two million flights in 2026.
1. American Airlines to Offer Free In-Flight Wi-Fi for Select Travelers
American Airlines announced this week that it will begin providing complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi on select flights starting this month. The service will be available on approximately two million flights in 2026, covering most domestic mainline aircraft and a subset of international routes. Free access will be granted to AAdvantage loyalty members who hold Gold status or above, as well as to primary cardholders of the airline’s cobranded credit cards. The move follows American’s April commitment to invest $400 million in inflight connectivity upgrades and comes as the carrier seeks to differentiate its product offering while encouraging incremental spending on board.
2. Centennial Partnership with OBAP Celebrates Inclusive Aviation Progress
As American Airlines marks its 100th anniversary, the airline has committed to serve as Title Sponsor of the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals’ 50th Annual Conference. The partnership launches January 13, 2026, at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport—the site of OBAP’s inaugural meeting—and will culminate in an August 12–14 conference featuring a documentary premiere, Hall of Fame induction and youth engagement workshops. American, which operates over 6,000 daily flights to more than 350 destinations in 60 countries and employs 130,000 aviation professionals, joins OBAP in extending career pathways to underrepresented communities. Since hiring Captain David E. Harris in 1964—who co-founded OBAP in 1976—the airline and nonprofit claim to have reached over 20,000 students annually through mentorship, training and advocacy programs.
3. Frequent Flyer Elite Requirements to Remain Unchanged for 2027
In a bid to retain high-spending customers, American Airlines confirmed it will keep its elite status thresholds steady for the 2027 qualification year, marking the third consecutive year without adjustment. The carrier’s entry-level Gold status remains at 40,000 Loyalty Points, while new milestone perks have been introduced at 15,000 points: members will receive two onboard food and beverage vouchers or a subscription to digital publications such as The New York Times Games or The Athletic. American’s decision mirrors similar announcements by Delta Air Lines and United Airlines and aligns with the industry’s shift toward revenue-based loyalty models. The carrier has also accelerated investments in refreshed cabin interiors and expanded lounge footprints to bolster its premium proposition.
