Anthropic, Musk outline dueling approaches to AI-era philanthropy
SPCX•Anthropic plans to commit 5% of its shares to a public-benefit fund, with the possibility of additional shares as its valuation rises; Elon Musk says he will give one SpaceX share to every child in America next year.
1. Different giving approaches
Anthropic plans to commit 5% of its shares to a Public Benefit Fund, while Musk said he would give one SpaceX share to every child in America next year. The value of Musk’s proposed giveaway was estimated at roughly $11 billion based on current share prices and a US census figure of 72 million children.
2. Anthropic fund details
Anthropic said its fund could support direct distributions and efforts to address AI’s labor-market impact, building on a previously announced $200 million commitment to study and address labor-market disruption. At the board’s discretion, the fund could receive an additional 2% of Anthropic’s shares for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a baseline that has not yet been disclosed. The company said the fund’s equity would not be used for lobbying or political giving.
3. Potential valuations
Anthropic’s planned IPO could value the company at roughly $2 trillion; investors are reportedly weighing a lower valuation of around $1.5 trillion. At those valuations, a 5% stake would be worth between $75 billion and $100 billion. SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for more details about Musk’s proposed donations.
