Apple asks US court to overturn landmark $5.7 billion patent verdict
AAPL•Apple asked a federal judge in San Diego to overturn a $5.7 billion patent verdict won by Taction Technology over haptic feedback in iPhones and Apple Watches. A jury found on September 25 that Apple's Taptic Engine infringed two Taction patents.
1. Apple challenges verdict
Apple told the court that the verdict was “untethered to any evidence at all” and argued there was insufficient evidence to support the award. It also cited the judge's pre-verdict remark that he was “not sure that the figure that appears on the verdict form is what the jury meant to convey.”
2. Patent case background
Taction filed the lawsuit in 2021. The San Diego-based company uses its haptic technology in headphones and gaming headsets. Several other US patent verdicts worth more than $1 billion have been overturned or reduced.
