Apple Raises MacBook Air Prices $200, MacBook Pro Prices $300 and Hikes HomePod Costs
AAPL•Apple raised iPad and MacBook prices due to soaring memory and storage chip costs driven by AI datacenter buildout. The MacBook Air 512GB model now costs $200 more, the MacBook Pro 1TB model $300 more, with HomePod and Apple TV prices also increasing and shares tumbling nearly 5%.
1. Price Increases Across Product Lines
Apple implemented broad price hikes across its iPad, MacBook and accessories lineup after reporting an inability to absorb record chip cost increases. The MacBook Air 512GB now sells for $200 more, the MacBook Pro 1TB carries a $300 premium, and both HomePod models plus Apple TV have also seen list-price increases.
2. Memory Chip Cost Surge
Dynamic random access memory prices jumped nearly 98% in Q1 2026 and are forecast to rise another 58–63% this quarter as AI datacenter projects absorb the bulk of supply. Major memory suppliers like Micron have secured $22 billion in long-term commitments from AI firms, diverting capacity away from consumer electronics.
3. Market Reaction and Outlook
Apple shares fell almost 5% on the pricing announcement while rival PC maker Dell dropped more than 8%. Analysts warn that iPhone prices are likely to rise ahead of the fall launch, and industry data project smartphone sales down nearly 14% and PC shipments off 11.3% this year due to higher device costs.
