Apple Rolls Out Siri AI Camera Mode, On-Device AI Photo Editing in iOS 27
Apple will embed Siri AI mode into the iPhone camera app in iOS 27 this fall, offering on-device Visual Intelligence toggles for object queries, reverse image search, nutrition label scanning and contact capture, all accessed via a new shutter button or long-press on the Camera Control. In parallel, Apple Intelligence Tools on iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 will introduce on-device AI editing capabilities like Extend, Enhance, Reframe and Clean Up, though internal tests flag potential performance inconsistencies that could lead to feature adjustments before release.
1. Siri AI Mode Integration
iOS 27 will integrate Visual Intelligence directly into the iPhone camera app under a new Siri mode. Users can point at objects or scenes to query ChatGPT, perform Google reverse image searches, extract business details, scan nutrition labels and capture contact information. The feature is accessible via a redesigned shutter button styled after the Apple Intelligence logo or by holding the Camera Control button introduced with iPhone 16.
2. AI Photo Editing Suite
Across iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, Apple Intelligence Tools will anchor a redesigned photo editor offering Extend, Enhance, Reframe and Clean Up functions. These on-device tools aim to expand image boundaries, adjust lighting and perspective, and remove unwanted elements within seconds, reinforcing Apple’s focus on privacy and performance.
3. Development Challenges and Timeline
Early internal testing has revealed uneven performance in features like Extend and Reframe, while Clean Up has drawn criticism for visual artifacts. Apple may refine, delay or scale back specific capabilities ahead of the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a consumer rollout slated for this fall.
