Apple, Shyamalan convince US appeals court to uphold TV show copyright win
AAPL•A US appeals court upheld Apple and M. Night Shyamalan’s jury win in filmmaker Francesca Gregorini’s copyright lawsuit over the Apple TV+ show “Servant.”
1. Appeals court upholds verdict
The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Gregorini’s challenges to a jury verdict that found “Servant” could not have copied her film, “The Truth About Emanuel.”
2. Dispute over the shows
Gregorini sued Apple and Shyamalan in 2020, arguing that “Servant,” which ran from 2018 to 2023, was a “brazen copy” of her film. Both works depict a grieving mother who forms an attachment to a realistic doll. The jury found last year that the makers of “Servant” lacked access to Gregorini’s film before making the show.
