Apple to Launch Photo-Based Bill Splitting with Apple Watch Integration
AAPL•Apple is developing a receipt-splitting feature that uses image recognition to parse restaurant bills, allocate items to diners, calculate tax and tip, and send payment requests directly through an iPhone. Users will be able to approve and settle charges via Apple Watch without needing third-party apps.
1. Feature Overview
Apple’s new bill-splitting tool lets users photograph a restaurant receipt, automatically identify ordered items, calculate each person’s share of tax and tip, and generate individual payment requests. This leverages on-device image recognition to minimize manual input and errors.
2. Deep Wallet and Watch Integration
Once items are assigned, diners can approve and pay directly through Apple Watch or iPhone Wallet, streamlining settlement without needing to exchange cards. Integration with Messages will allow users to request and receive payments in the chat thread.
3. Competitive Impact
This native solution could displace third-party services like Toast’s QR systems, Venmo, PayPal and Splitwise by offering a frictionless, end-to-end payment flow. Merchants and diners may favor the built-in option over installing additional apps.
4. Launch Outlook
The feature is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s upcoming software showcase in June and roll out later this year as part of a major iOS update. Wider adoption will depend on merchant acceptance and user familiarity with Apple Cash.
