Apple Warns EU DMA API Mandate for Google Services Risks Privacy
Apple warns EU Digital Markets Act draft would require Google to open Maps, Search and YouTube APIs to rival AI developers, potentially exposing personal data and raising security concerns for iPhone users. The company argues that mandated access could degrade service quality, infringe on user privacy and undermine platform integrity.
1. Apple’s Formal Objection
On May 13, Apple submitted feedback on the EU Digital Markets Act draft, objecting to requirements that Google provide API access to Maps, Search and YouTube for third-party AI developers. The letter states that forcing Google to share core data sets would conflict with existing privacy safeguards and platform security measures on iOS devices.
2. Security and Privacy Concerns
Apple contends that opening APIs to external AI rivals could expose sensitive user information—such as location history and search activity—to unvetted developers, increasing the risk of data breaches. The company also warns that mandated integration may lead to degraded performance and undermine the integrity of both Apple’s ecosystem and Google’s services.
