Argon revives Google's AI standing, but questions remain
Google unveiled Argon, a flagship AI model for its Gemini 4 family, as it seeks to strengthen its position against OpenAI and Anthropic; analysts said real-world tests and stronger core products remain important.
1. Analysts weigh launch
Jefferies said early benchmarks appear to confirm a turn for Google, though real-world tests will need to validate them. Evercore ISI called Argon's competitive pricing a positive for its application layer, while J.P. Morgan said Gemini 4 must also strengthen Google's core products.
2. Investment and safeguards
Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne said Google needs to keep releasing more powerful models to show it is not falling behind competitors, adding that such capabilities require greater investment in safeguards. Analyst price targets cited were $445 from Jefferies, $450 from Evercore ISI and $420 from J.P. Morgan.
