As Iran war drives up US gasoline prices, Trump blames Ukraine, Democrats
USO•President Donald Trump blamed Democrats and Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries for high gasoline prices as energy prices rose during the war in Iran. Ukraine’s attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have also driven up prices, particularly for diesel fuel.
1. Trump assigns blame
Under pressure from rising energy prices, Trump said gasoline prices were being driven by refineries, including Russian facilities hit by Ukraine and refineries closing in California and other Democratic-led states. He said record volumes of oil were coming out almost daily and the Strait of Hormuz was no longer driving prices.
2. Energy prices rise
Energy prices have spiked since Iran cut off access to the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that normally carries one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies. Ukraine’s attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure have also driven up prices, particularly for diesel fuel.
