AstraZeneca to invest over $1 billion in Massachusetts, boost workforce
AZN•AstraZeneca said it would invest more than $1 billion in Massachusetts as part of its $50 billion U.S. investment plan, with the move expected to expand its state workforce by more than 50% in the coming years.
1. Cambridge research center opens
AstraZeneca opened a 570,000-square-foot, 18-story research and development center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The facility will focus on treatments for cancer, chronic and rare diseases, and cell therapies.
2. Nearly 2,000 researchers
The center, together with AstraZeneca’s nearby genomic medicine site, will house nearly 2,000 researchers and scientists. The new facility includes 10 floors of laboratories equipped with robotics, automation and artificial intelligence.
3. U.S. operations
The Cambridge site joins AstraZeneca’s other major U.S. research center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The company has 24 research, manufacturing, commercial and corporate sites in the United States and employs more than 25,000 people there.
