AT&T Commits $19 B to California Fiber and 1,200 New Cell Sites by 2030
AT&T will invest $19 billion in California fiber and wireless networks through 2030, boosting its 10-year total investment to $35 billion with $3 billion more than the prior five years. The plan adds fiber to over 4 million households and 1,200 new cell sites, phases out legacy copper, and hires hundreds of technicians.
1. Scope of Investment
AT&T commits $19 billion to upgrade California’s fiber and wireless networks by the end of 2030, increasing its total 2021–2030 investment to $35 billion—$3 billion more than the previous five-year period. This represents the company’s largest infrastructure commitment in the state, targeting comprehensive network modernization.
2. Fiber and Wireless Deployment
The rollout will extend fiber service to over 4 million additional households and businesses, bringing the statewide fiber footprint above 9 million locations. Concurrently, AT&T will install 1,200 new cell sites across urban, suburban and rural areas to strengthen wireless coverage.
3. Transition from Copper and Customer Impact
Beginning June 1, 2027, AT&T will phase out energy-inefficient copper-based phone services in areas with available fiber, offering a free three-month trial of AT&T Phone – Advanced and discounts for LifeLine customers. The phased upgrade ensures uninterrupted voice and 911 service for all existing customers.
4. Efficiency Gains and Workforce Expansion
The modernized network is projected to save 300 million kWh annually—equivalent to avoiding emissions from 17 million gallons of gasoline. To support deployment and maintenance, AT&T will hire and train hundreds of new technicians and expand digital skills training through Connected Learning Centers.
