Autoliv and Tensor Unveil Foldable Level 4 Robocar Steering Wheel with Adaptive Airbags
Autoliv and Tensor have co-developed the world’s first foldable steering wheel for the Tensor Robocar, which retracts in Level 4 mode and supports dual manual and autonomous control. The wheel will enter volume production in H2 2026 with integrated adaptive airbag systems for enhanced safety across driving modes.
1. Autoliv and Tensor Unveil Foldable Steering Wheel for Robocar
Autoliv has partnered with Tensor to develop the industry’s first foldable steering wheel, designed for the Tensor Robocar and scheduled for volume production in the second half of 2026. This dual-mode system retracts under Level 4 autonomous operation—where the vehicle handles all driving tasks within defined conditions—transforming the cabin into a multifunctional space. In manual mode, the steering wheel deploys instantly, linked to an adaptive airbag module; in autonomous mode, a panel-integrated airbag takes over. The design supports flexible interior layouts, boosting passenger comfort and space by up to 30% compared with traditional fixed steering setups. The solution will debut at CES in Las Vegas (January 6–9, 2026) at Tensor’s booth #5701.
2. Q3 2025 Revenue Growth and Profitability Strengthen Buy Thesis
In Q3 2025, Autoliv delivered 5.9% year-over-year revenue growth, driven by robust global demand for advanced safety systems and a gradual recovery in electronic component supply chains. Operating margin expanded by 120 basis points to 11.8%, reflecting disciplined cost management and higher content per vehicle in Europe and North America. Free cash flow rose by 15% to $510 million, strengthening the balance sheet and enabling a 10% increase in the quarterly dividend. While economic headwinds in the U.S. and China warrant close monitoring—vehicle production forecasts may be revised down by 2–4% in 2026—Autoliv’s leadership in airbags, seatbelts and next-generation steering solutions supports a softly bullish outlook.
