Axon sued over AI-powered license plate reader network
AXON•A proposed class action accuses Axon of unlawfully collecting and storing information about millions of California drivers through its automated license plate reader network. The lawsuit seeks more than $5 million in damages and a court order stopping the alleged practices.
1. Privacy allegations
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in federal court in San Francisco, alleges Axon failed to disclose how it collects, uses and shares plate data gathered through its camera systems, as required by a California privacy provision. It says Axon has more than 1,000 cameras in California and that millions of drivers may have been affected.
2. Proposed class and relief
The proposed class covers drivers whose plate information was captured by an automated license plate reader in California and processed or stored by Axon’s system since 2023. The complaint says some cameras are installed in high-traffic areas and others are placed inside police vehicles. Axon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
