Banking regulators step up AI risk checks as cyberattacks threaten financial stability, Tekedia Capital says
XLF•U.S. and European regulators are increasing scrutiny of banks’ AI use as AI-enabled cyberattack risks rise. The ECB gave euro zone banks until the end of October to submit plans addressing these threats and strengthening recovery arrangements.
1. Regulatory scrutiny increases
U.S. agencies are examining autonomous AI agents, foreign-developed models, auditability and banks’ ability to shut systems down quickly. European supervisors are emphasizing operational resilience, including “bare-metal” recovery and mapping AI dependencies across third parties.
2. Recovery plans required
The ECB set an end-of-October deadline for euro zone banks to submit plans addressing AI-enabled cyber threats and stronger recovery arrangements. Regulators are increasingly treating recovery capability as a financial stability issue, rather than solely a cybersecurity control problem.
