Banks brace for tighter oversight from US Congress after Democrats sweep
HBAN•Banks expect heightened congressional scrutiny after Democrats took control of both houses, with probes potentially targeting consumer costs, lending practices and regulation. The industry is also seeking bipartisan action to make technology and social media companies help curb AI-driven financial fraud.
1. Scrutiny expected to rise
Banks are preparing for investigations and hearings after Democrats took control of Congress, with executives and analysts expecting lawmakers to examine cost-of-living issues and summon bank chiefs to testify. Potential areas of scrutiny include junk fees, predatory lending, mortgages and whether reduced oversight has harmed customers or weakened lenders.
2. Consumer protection priorities
Senator Elizabeth Warren is seen as the frontrunner to chair the Senate Banking Committee, while Representative Maxine Waters is the lead contender to chair the House Financial Services Committee. Analysts expect bank CEOs may again be called to testify, and flagged possible credit-card interest rate caps as a policy risk.
3. Banks push fraud measures
Banks are also seeking action to make technology and social media companies do more to curb financial fraud linked to increasingly sophisticated AI scams. Huntington Bancshares CEO Stephen Steinour said technology companies should exclude accounts linked to fraudsters and that the effort could win bipartisan support; banks may also ask lawmakers to review wire-transfer regulations.
