Barclays warns AI and satellites pose a material overhang for European telcos
XLC•Barclays says agentic AI and satellite broadband threaten European telecoms’ cash flows and valuations. It downgraded Vodafone, Proximus, Telefonica and OTE, while upgrading KPN and Telia.
1. Technology threats
Barclays said AI agents could help consumers find promotional discounts, creating opportunities to optimise spending and hurting telecom revenues. The broker also cited satellite broadband competition and warned the combined technological headwinds would remain a “material overhang” for valuations.
2. Rating changes
Barclays downgraded Vodafone, Proximus and Telefonica to underweight from equal weight, and OTE to underweight from overweight, citing equity valuation risk that it said is amplified by high leverage for some. It upgraded KPN and Telia to overweight from equal weight, viewing them as the least vulnerable.
