BGE wins Maryland approval for Brandon Shores retirement transmission upgrades

The project supports the retirement of nearly 2,000 MW of coal generation in Maryland, reducing emissions while maintaining regional grid reliability.
Exelon utilities PECO and Pepco were also directed by PJM to pursue transmission upgrades in their service areas to address plant-retirement reliability risks.
BGE estimates Maryland power imports could rise to 80% from about 40% once the plants retire, increasing supply-cost pressure on customers.
Maryland approval for transmission upgrades
BGE, an Exelon utility, won Maryland PSC authorization to proceed with PJM-directed transmission upgrades tied to the retirements of Brandon Shores and H.A. Wagner.
The buildout targets completion in December 2028 and includes new substations, expanded facilities, transmission rebuilds and added circuits within existing rights-of-way.
