BioNTech to shutter three sites in Germany as no buyers emerge
BNTX•BioNTech said it will close three German sites after failing to find buyers as it shifts away from pandemic-era manufacturing. The restructuring affects up to 1,860 jobs.
1. Sites to close
BioNTech said it would close its sites in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg and Tuebingen after a wide-ranging sales process failed to produce a sale. The company said it had agreed with the works council on socially responsible solutions and supplementary redundancy terms for affected staff.
2. Production shift
The restructuring, affecting up to 1,860 jobs, is part of a transfer of COVID-19 vaccine production to partner Pfizer. BioNTech had said in May it would seek buyers for the German sites or wind them down.
