Bip Capital flags AI risks in software portfolios as public valuations reset
XLK•Bip Capital said venture and growth equity managers should assess portfolio-level AI exposure, including per-seat revenue risks and software valuation marks. The S&P 500 software and services index lost about $830 billion in market value from January 28 to February 4, 2026, while the SEG SaaS Index median EV-to-revenue multiple fell to 3.2x in Q2 2026 from 5.7x a year earlier.
1. AI exposure and valuations
Bip Capital said venture and growth equity managers should quantify portfolio-level AI exposure, focusing on per-seat revenue risks and software valuation marks. The S&P 500 software and services index lost about $830 billion in market value between January 28 and February 4, 2026, and the SEG SaaS Index median enterprise-value-to-trailing-revenue multiple fell to 3.2x in the second quarter of 2026 from 5.7x a year earlier.
2. Private-market evidence
Private funding-round pricing largely avoided the public-market reset, with Carta reporting an 11.4% down-round rate in the first quarter of 2026. Operating evidence remained limited: McKinsey's August 2026 survey found 37% of respondents attributed any EBIT impact to AI, essentially unchanged year-over-year.
