Blackstone, Bain and Warburg prepare final bids for Fuji Media's property unit
BX•Blackstone, Bain Capital and Warburg Pincus are expected to submit final bids by the end of October for Fuji Media's Sankei Building unit, which Fuji Media expects could be valued at about 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion), including debt.
1. Final bids expected
Blackstone, Bain Capital and Warburg Pincus are among investors expected to submit final bids for Sankei Building by the end of October. BGO, a real estate investment firm under Canada's Sun Life Financial, also plans to make a binding offer. Fuji Media expects a deal to value the unit at around 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion), including debt.
2. Shareholder seeks disclosure
Vasanta Master Fund, which owns less than 1% of Fuji Media, urged the company to disclose more about Sankei Building's asset value, the transaction structure, sale options and use of proceeds. The fund said the portfolio's size and complexity could limit the buyer pool. Fuji Media said it is evaluating the method, scale and timing of possible investments and will announce a decision once made.
3. Sale follows pressure
If the entire unit is sold, it would be one of Japan's largest-ever real estate takeovers. Fuji Media began considering divesting real estate holdings, including Sankei Building, after pressure from activist investors; in February, it bought back about 30% of its shares, worth 235 billion yen.
